Fetch Dog Rescue was founded in March of 2023, by 4 partners who are incredibly passionate about helping to save dogs who wouldn't otherwise have a voice. We are all dog lovers and have committed our lives to taking dogs from bad situations and helping them find their loving forever homes in the CT area. Our dogs come from across the Southern states. Texas, Mississippi, Georgia, Alabama and the Carolinas are just a few states that are struggling with over crowded shelters, spay and neuter laws and strays. We work with rescue partners to take into care dogs of all breeds and provide medical care, transport and assist in the placement into their forever homes in the Fairfield county area of Connecticut. We have strong relationships with these partners and they stay in constant communication with us during this process. Our partners also do dog and child testing, and some do cats as well. Sigrid Schultz, longtime Westport resident and journalist was born in Chicago in 1893. In 1901, her family immigrated to Europe and in 1918 Schultz became an interpreter for the Chicago Tribune’s Berlin office. By 1926 she became the paper’s Bureau Chief for Central Europe—the first woman to hold such a position at the paper. Schultz witnessed the dangerous rise of the Nazi party and its leader Adolf Hitler. A celebrated cook and hostess, Schultz held dinner parties for Nazi officials during which she skillfully extracted information about the Germans’ plans. Schultz filed over 1,700 newspaper reports on the Nazi party between 1933 and 1939. She came to live in Westport in 1941 after being injured in an Allied Air Raid. Unable to return to Germany, Schultz worked for the Office of Strategic Services—precursor to today’s CIA—creating dossiers on significant people and groups. While she was determined to return to Europe and continue reporting, Schultz was denied re-entry until January 1945 when she was embedded with the American First Army and was with them when they liberated Buchenwald Concentration Camp. Later that year, Schultz was among the few reporters admitted to theLunenberg trials of Nazi officials (both men and women). She returned to Westport in December of 1945, writing a book and speaking nationwide. Schultz never traveled to Germany after 1954 but kept current on news from Europe. She died in her home on May 14, 1980 at 87 years old. Several journalism scholarships have been named in honor of Schultz including at Central Connecticut State and Columbia Universities. The construction of the New York and New Haven Railroad in 1840 dramatically changed both the landscape and the face of the town. Many of the original railroad construction workers were Irish immigrants who settled around the line’s first Westport stop in the Saugatuck area, nicknamed “Little Dublin”. In 1878 the new iron bridge using the most up-to-date swing technology replaced the wooden drawbridge over the Saugatuck River, that had been destroyed by shipworms. The bridge was located just near where the river emptied into the Long Island Sound and was, like the railroad, built by Irish and Italian immigrants. Today called the William F . Rose O’Neill, a suffragist and progressive thinker, purchased Castle Carabas on Imperial Avenue in Westport in 1922. She created the Kewpie Doll, which first appeared as a comic strip in the 1909 Christmas issue of Ladies’ Home Journal. The comic was so popular that it inspired the creation of dolls. The first dolls were produced in 1912 in Germany, and they quickly became part of a major toy and merchandise franchise. O'Neill often used her famous and beloved Kewpie characters to promote women’s suffrage and equality. By 1914, O’Neill was the highest‑paid female illustrator in the United States. In the pioneering book, Women of The War (1866), the noted 19th-century historian and author Frank Moore gave one of the first rich overviews of the heroism and sacrifice of women during the American Civil War. "The story of the war will never be fully or fairly written if the achievements of women in it are untold. They do not figure in the official reports, they are not gazetted for deeds as gallant as ever were done; the names of thousands are unknown beyond the neighborhood where they live, or the hospitals where they loved to labor; yet there is no feature in our war more creditable to us as a nation..." According to the 1860 census, one quarter of the manufacturing workforce was composed of women. However, wages were very low and working conditions poor. As the Civil War began women were presented with new challenges and possibilities as they were tasked with maintaining their communities in the absence of the majority of able bodied, working men. Seventy years before women like "Rosie the Riveter" took over mens' jobs on the homefront in World War II, the Civil War gave women greater independence. Many earned their own money, and managed their own finances for the first time. On both sides of the conflict women contributed to the armed forces constant need for supplies of food, arms, uniforms, and medical supplies. The first Ladies' Soldiers' Aid Society in the nation was created in Bridgeport, and coordinated provisions to be shipped to the front. Over the course of the war, between 7 ,000 and 20,000 Ladies Aid Societies were established. In the North these organizations received federal support from the U.S. Sanitary Commission (USSC), making them even more effective and organized. The society met every week and its members, needing money to purchase cloth and other necessities, went from door to door "to wake up every one to a sense of sacred duty that devolved upon us all." Also in Bridgeport, the Ladies' Relief Society, formed in 1861, and the League of Loyal Women of Bridgeport, formed in 1863, connected Fairfield County to the United States Sanitary Commission. Conti degli Azzoni is a historic, family-owned estate in the town of Montefano, in the idyllic region of Le Marche in Central Italy on the Adriatic Sea. Since 2016, the winery has been converting their 100+ hectares of vineyards to organic farming. The winery is currently in the process of completing their B-Corp certification, a rigorous set of criteria that promotes sustainability in all areas, from organic agriculture to eco-friendly packaging to renewable sources of energy to responsible employment practices.

The Wakeman Town Farm Sustainability Center is an organic demonstration homestead dedicated to serving the Westport Community. The Farm is a model facility created to educate the community with local healthy food production, responsible land stewardship, sustainable practices and community service orientation. Activities include educational workshops, student internships, after-school environmental clubs, children’s summer camp programs, growing fruits and vegetables, animal husbandry, providing a farm stand and CSA pickup location.
